Thousands of ketchup containers

invaded the sands of the beaches of southern Italy, more specifically in the Salento region, since the weekend.

Some of the jars are empty, but others still contain the product

, mixed with seawater.

Thousands of containers reached the sands of the beaches of southern Italy (Archeoplastica – viaggi.nanopress.it).

The products are

of North American origin

, but the provenance remains a mystery and authorities are investigating.

No one knows where they come from

According to local residents, a first wave,

in large numbers

, began to appear on Sunday, followed by others in smaller groups.

The main hypothesis of the investigation is that the cargo has

fallen from a ship

that was passing near the coast of Salerno.

An environmental group formed the word ketchup with some bottles (Archeoplastica – viaggi.nanopress.it).

The images and reports of the arrival of plastic waste were made by the environmentalist and creator of the "Archeoplástica" project, Enzo Suma, which seeks to sensitize communities about material contamination around the world.

A year ago, Suma recorded the arrival of jars of Albanian preserves on Italian beaches.
