Save at the expense of the patients: sharp criticism of Assuta and the Ministry of Health following the failure of the embryos - voila! news

The inspection committee established following the failure of the embryos revealed that Asuta Hospital in Israel preferred economic considerations over medical ones: "turned the medical institution into a production line and caused suffering and pain." The report negates the Supreme Court's decision, according to which there are two women with a high probability of being the mother of the baby Sophia

Asuta Hospital in Rishon Lezion preferred financial considerations over the quality of care, which ultimately led to the failure of embryos - according to the Ministry of Health report published this evening (Wednesday).

The conclusions of the inspection committee, which was established after an embryo was fertilized in the body of the wrong woman, show that a chain of mistakes led to the replacement of the embryos, and that the source is in the early preparation of the fertilized eggs, which was done against the procedure.

According to the commission's report, it is likely that the mistake could have been discovered soon after the embryos were returned to the mother.

The members of the committee believe that this is not a single mistake, but a chain of mistakes, which they say did not stem from the error of just one staff member.

The identification processes should be carried out according to the procedures by several staff members and in laboratory processes, and it is not possible to determine whether and which of the staff members who were involved accidentally discovered it at a certain point during the process.

The inspection committee did not spare criticism from the Ministry of Health either.

From the conclusions of the report it appears that the control tool of the office in the period leading up to the incident did not faithfully reflect and was not able to reveal the failures in the safety culture of the unit;

This contributed to an exaggerated sense of security of the staff and the management that "everything is fine", while the reality was far from that.

Finally, the committee wrote that in the hospital "the economic consideration overshadows the medical considerations", and added: "Unfortunately, economic considerations were preferred over basic principles of maintaining the quality and safety of treatment. This preference turned the medical institution into an assembly line, derailed the cart and caused suffering And for the pain, not only for the patients who are in the first circle of the event, but for the community of patients and caregivers at Assuta and all IVF units in Israel."

"Production line".

The report also states that out of the 22 women from the first circle, there are two women who have a high probability of a genetic link to baby Sophia, one of them being one of the petitioners.

This actually negates the determination of the judges of the Supreme Court at the beginning of the month, according to which all the petitioning women have a low chance of becoming the mother, and therefore there is no point in carrying out the genetic tests.

Judge Alex Stein believed that even if it is not possible to determine what the exact numerical threshold of a "reasonable chance" is, it is certainly a probabilistic test.

In this case, according to him, the probability of each of the patients being found to be genetically related to the baby is 4.5%, and perhaps even less, and in any case it does not cross the threshold of reasonable chance.
