Bordeaux wants to be part of the experiment.
New urban radars, the size of small boxes placed on traffic lights at pedestrian crossings, should soon appear in the city.
Set up in 2021 in four cities in France including Marseille and Toulouse for a test phase (without verbalization), they could be extended to other cities from 2023. This is at least the wish of the town hall of Bordeaux.

We immediately applied to have urban radars in the city
," explains Amine Smihi, deputy mayor of Bordeaux responsible for tranquility, security, prevention and the maintenance of public space.
An agreement in principle was concluded with the prefecture of the Gironde at the beginning of the year, so that Bordeaux is part of the next salvo of cities to experiment with this road control system, which has many advantages.

”, explains the elected official, stressing that their large number (one or several dozen per city) could have a strong deterrent effect on offenders and allow
“to do respect the 30km / h
", extended to 90% of the streets of Bordeaux since 2022.

“
The idea is not to have a systematic activation
”, underlines however Amine Smihi, but that certain radars are activated randomly, because the city does not have the objective of increasing the number of verbalizations.
Through this new lever of action, the municipality wishes above all to encourage road users to respect the rules.
These radars should also be “
widely distributed
” in different parts of the city and change places regularly, so that drivers remain vigilant.
The forthcoming intervention of these means of control is all the more desirable since, as in Bordeaux where the number of fines is increasing, the department is also experiencing a very clear increase in the number of infractions on the road.
Last month, the Gironde prefecture revealed that in 2022 the number of fatal accidents was at its highest for ten years in the department, with 86 people killed on the roads of Gironde.
The primary cause of these fatal accidents is excessive or inappropriate speed (36% of accidents), ahead of blood alcohol levels and inattention (22% each).
