The promise of a journey time divided by three for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Metropolis of Lyon (EELV) will validate the bridge project linking the Saulaie district, in Oullins, to that of Gerland, in Lyon, in a deliberation proposed for the vote of the council on Monday March 27.

This 300 meter long structure will span the Rhône downstream from its confluence with the Saône, but also the urban boulevard M7 and the Quai Pierre Sémard.

It will be dedicated to active modes and will therefore allow, over 7 meters of lane width, pedestrians (3 meters) and cyclists (4 meters) to avoid a major detour via the Raymond-Barre bridge, located 1.4 kilometers north.

A project at 21 million euros for which the Metropolis received 6, as part of the State-Region Plan Contract (CPRE).

Underground, the two districts have already been linked by metro line B since 2013. But there is no surface crossing over the 5 kilometers separating the La Mulatière and Raymond-Barre bridges, on the one hand, and the Pierre-Bénite, on the other hand.

This project is also part of the development of the ZAC de la Saulaie, this SNCF wasteland requalified to accommodate - in the long term - 900 housing units.

A crossing also essential to the express bike network carried by the Metropolis, since the sector will be crossed by the future Lyon route 9.

Avoid the Anxiety of the Mulatiere Knot

The consultation phase which is ending has revealed contributions

“very favorable to the project”,

according to the Metropolis.

With 93% validating its usefulness and 72% its location, which will notably allow safer and shorter journeys by avoiding crossing the La Mulatière bridge.

“The aim is to connect the two districts on the surface for pedestrians and bicycles, to open up a new major continuity of public space contributing to the transparency of the river and the road infrastructure, while magnifying the major landscape qualities of the site at all scales"

, praises the deliberation.

With in particular breathtaking views of the Rhône, the basilica of Fourvière and the Musée des Confluences.

It is precisely in this district of the Confluence that another footbridge should see the light of day, or rather see it again, to the south of the confluence.

This is the removable one above the dock.

Commissioned in May 2010, it was withdrawn in 2012 after several incidents during lifting.

A blockage in the intermediate position required an emergency removal of the footbridge in May 2012. But the structure was kept by the Métropole, which carried out an expert report to determine the causes and responsibilities for the blockage of the cylinders.

"The conclusions of the expertise relate to an under-sizing of the cylinders in relation to the number of necessary lifts and defective cylinders"

, according to another deliberation presented to the vote next Monday.

It can be put back in place for 800,000 euros
