Transgender people are prohibited from competing in athletics events

2023-03-23T19:59:09.691Z

The head of the International Athletics Federation said more evidence is needed on whether or not trans women have an advantage over biological women in competition.

The

International Athletics Federation (World Athletics)

decided this Thursday that

transgender people will not be able to participate in international women's events

"from March 31," according to its president, Sebastian Coe.

It also agreed to

new rules that will prevent Caster Semenya and other athletes with a difference in sexual development from competing

.

"The (World Athletics) Council decided to exclude transgender male and female athletes who have experienced male puberty

from international women's competition

," Coe explained.

Thus, the same rules approved by swimming last year were adopted, by prohibiting the participation of athletes who have made the transition from male to female and who have passed male puberty.

"The World Athletics Council took clear steps to protect the women's category of our sport and to do so by restricting the participation of transgender and intersex athletes," he added.

Most of the athletics actors consulted "believed that transgender athletes

should not compete in the female category

," he explained.

How many athletes does it affect and the request for tests

Coe stated that these rule updates, for athletes with a difference in sexual development, affect 13 athletes.

Among them,

Semenya, a two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters

, who since 2019 has not competed in events from 400 meters to 1,600.

Now

they must take medication for six months to be able to compete

.

The current regulations dictated that transgender athletes who wanted to participate in the female category keep their testosterone level below the threshold of 5 nanomoles/l for one year.

"For many, the evidence that trans women do not retain an advantage over biological women is insufficient.

They want more evidence before considering the option of inclusion in the female category

," added the leader.

Sebastian Coe during his press conference.

Intersex athletes like Semenya must, since April 2018, maintain their testosterone level below 5 nml/l for six months to be authorized to participate in distances between 400 and 1,600 meters.

That regulation had been denounced by Semenya, who refuses to undergo hormone treatment or an operation.

The South African athlete lost the appeals filed, especially before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had asked sports federations in November 2021 to establish their own criteria on transgender and intersex people in high-level competitions.
