How old is the museum?
The School of Mines moved into this hotel in Vendôme
(the aptly named, editor's note),
boulevard Saint-Michel, adjoining the Luxembourg Gardens, in 1815. As for the collection of mineralogy, then called Cabinet des mines, which dates from 1794, it was exhibited there a few years later, in the middle of the 19th century.

With 100,000 samples in the drawers, and 5,000 exhibited to the public, of a remarkable variety and quality, it is still today one of the most important collections in the world, the fourth, after those of the Smithsonian in Washington, the National Museum of Natural History in Paris (MNHN) and the British Museum in London.
