New trouble at the hunting course in Hattenhofen.

An area to the north of the site is contaminated with heavy metals.

The environmental toxins come from ammunition residues.

Hattenhofen - The current operator of the shooting range can't help it.

The municipality is therefore responsible for decontamination.

The town hall is appalled.

Lead, arsenic and the notorious polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) slumber in the ground north of the hunting course.

This will be communicated by the district office on request.

Already in 2014, heavy pollution of the soil was determined.

A detailed investigation was carried out by 2021.

The areas may not be grazed because of the severity of the contamination.

Current operator innocent

The cause of the contamination was spent shotgun ammunition made of lead.

However, the current operator of the hunting course cannot be considered the cause.

He was able to prove that since the takeover in 2019, only steel shot has been used.

These do not contain any harmful substances.

community is responsible

The discovery could be costly for the community.

Because according to the Federal Soil Protection Act, the polluter is responsible for the decontamination.

The previous operator no longer exists.

"That's why the municipality of Hattenhofen, as the property owner, is responsible for the renovation," according to the district office.

Hattenhofen's mayor Franz Robeller is anything but enthusiastic about this view.

"Nobody was interested in that for 50 years," said the head of the town hall at the most recent meeting of the municipal council.

The mayor does not want to accept the fact that the municipality should now pay for the cleaning so easily.

"The cause is well known enough," he said.

"They were the operators of this shooting range, because we certainly didn't put lead or arsenic there."

Half a meter of earth

At the time, the district office was the approval authority that allowed the shooting operation, according to Robeller.

It is outrageous that the municipality should now be held responsible for the renovation.

Robeller estimates that at least half a meter of earth would have to be removed.

Anyone can imagine what that costs.

The report was not even officially delivered to the community, Robeller said.

You only got that from a third party.

He will seek a conversation with the district office.

Because he does not see and will fight tooth and nail that the community should take over the renovation of something that they definitely did not cause.

The head of the town hall says that it will probably not be possible to do without the involvement of a specialist lawyer.

Irrespective of this, local residents resist the noise from the shooting range, which the operator would like to manage economically.

Recently, there have been debates about an expert opinion in this context.
