– Actually, it doesn't matter at all what the weather is like in an indoor competition.

But Franz Ressler kept checking the weather forecast over the past week.

The head of the athletics department at TSV Peiting didn't need rain or even snow.

Well over 300 children and young people from 17 clubs had registered for the playful indoor sports festival.

Never that many before.

The triple gym in Peiting is big, yes.

But it would have been difficult to accommodate everyone.

But the weather cooperated, and Reßler and his helpers moved several stations outside.

Nothing stood in the way of the colourful, happy hustle and bustle.

And so last Sunday 293 children - a few had to cancel due to illness - competed, sprinted, jumped and threw.

This is significantly more than at the last sports festival in 2019, when 230 young athletes came.

The youngest in the U8 and U10 were required to throw the ball, the 30-metre steeplechase and the long jump.

The U12s and U14s showed what they can do in the 30-meter run, the medicine ball kick and the 5-man jump.

The helpers had set up a total of 13 stations.

At the end, a total of 42 relay teams competed.

As many viewers as never before

"It was really good," enthuses Reßler.

"I haven't seen a child cry.

That's important to me.” Because fun comes before performance.

But it was also appreciated.

For hosts TSV Peiting, Korbinian Fichtl, Xaver Mettig, Max Stadtmüller and Fanni Suttner won in their age groups.

In addition to the athletes, many spectators, especially relatives, came.

"I've been doing this for 20 years, but I've never seen anything like it," says Reßler.

"People flocked to the stadium."

50 cakes plastered

He has the 35 helpers to thank for the fact that everything went well.

"I can only be happy about them, they are all really good people," enthuses Reßler.

He suspects that the Peitinger Sports Festival in Bavaria is one of the largest of its kind.

The volunteers lent a hand at the stations, accompanied children as squad leaders, recorded the results and also sold cakes.

Volunteers donated 50 pieces for the event.

However, the head of department does not know how they tasted.

Not because he doesn't like cake.

He just didn't have time to eat during the sports festival.

And when the competitions were over, "everything was sold," says Reßler with a smile.

"I didn't get a piece of cake."
