Nearly a thousand former Air Force pilots today (Saturday) expressed support for the reserve pilots, who announced that they would freeze volunteering in the Air Force in response to the government's moves.
"Volunteer reserves only in democracy," they said in a letter sent by their representatives.
"The unwritten contract between the pilots and all reserve officers in the other branches of the IDF and the state from the day it was established was clear and unambiguous;
We will risk our lives in maintaining the security of the state, and the state will guard its soul as a democratic state according to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the spirit of the IDF," it said.
They also said that "the values on which the pilots were raised over generations do not allow them to continue to serve the country that is changing its face from democracy to dictatorship. The reservists only volunteer in a democracy.
"We, the past pilots, stand behind the active pilots in their decision.
We call on the government: stop the legislative train, don't push the pilots and other reserve servants out of the circle of volunteering."
