The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising started a new project: the rainbow pastoral.

The pilot location is the KBW Freising.

Freising

- "Yes, something is happening in the Catholic Church," confirmed Michael Brinkschröder, Project Manager Rainbow Pastoral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, referring to the blessing of same-sex couples initiated by the synodal path, which should soon be possible.

In order to better consider the concerns of queer Catholics and to offer exchange and advice for people from the LGBTI community, the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising has now started a new project: the rainbow pastoral.

One of the goals: to bring the topic of "queer church" into the parishes and the church institutions.

The Kreisbildungswerk (KBW) in Freising was selected as a pilot location with a few events to feel where the need might be.

discovered gender diversity

"The church has discovered gender diversity and now wants to spread this across the board," explained KBW Managing Director Marina Freudenstein at a press conference.

Although the KBW program is strongly demand-oriented, it is not always possible to “follow the mainstream”, says Freudenstein: “There are topics that are simply important.

And sometimes you have to put your fingers in the wound.” What she wishes for: “I hope that this series of events will open up the topic.

I am very excited."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

According to Michael Brinkschröder, the Rainbow Pastoral Project Manager of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, the subject of homosexuality and queerism has long been the focus of the archdiocese.

However, Corona has also brought a lot to a standstill here.

But now things are picking up speed again.

According to Brinkschröder, the tasks of rainbow pastoral care are quite complex and varied: for example, influencing the church itself or taking the issues out to the public.

And this is where the educational institutions such as the Freisinger KBW come into play, which can then use an extensive pool of suggested topics.

Topics such as: “All gender or what?

Did God create more than two genders?” or “Get me right – criminalization of LGBT and the Catholic Church”.

The big step

With three lectures, the KBW is taking a big step in terms of LGBTI in Catholic adult education - as the first pilot location in the diocese.

From here, the topic is to be spread widely, also in order to sensitize the local church, as well as the individual communities.

What Brinkschröder formulated very clearly: "People with a totally different opinion will not come, but there is a huge need for information, for example from parents." For whom the KBW events could still be interesting: pastors, teachers and the LGBTI community.

Here Brinkschröder reassured the KBW: "Should the events not be sustainable, the funds are there to finance a failure."

The mainspring

In addition to Brinkschröder, a strong driving force behind the pilot project was the theological consultant at the KBW, Florian Heinritzi, who, together with the Rainbow Pastoral Project Manager, worked on the finer points for Freising.

Brinkschröder described why it is now necessary to move quickly in this direction: "At some point the parishes will have to deal with these issues, then it is good if they find out about it now." Richard

Good to know

The next events as part of the pilot project will take place on April 19th and May 10th in the KBW Freising.

On April 19, the topic will be "Life Stories of Gay Catholic Men Who Were Convicted According to Article 175 of the Criminal Code" and on May 10, "Catholic Perspectives on Gender".

The first lecture has already taken place.
