New Russian nuclear rant or real threat of escalation?
Without excluding risks, Western governments and experts were rather inclined to put into perspective the consequences of the announcement made on Saturday by Vladimir Putin on Russian television: Moscow's decision to install "tactical" nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, its closest ally, at the gates of Europe.
“We have already helped our Belarusian colleagues and equipped their planes (…) Ten planes are ready to use this type of weapon
,” declared the head of the Kremlin, indicating that Iskanders had been transferred to Belarus.
These are short or medium range ballistic missiles (fifty to five hundred kilometres) that can also be used for tactical purposes, that is, “on the battlefield”.
In Washington, an official source reacted by indicating that he had
“no indication that Russia intends to use nuclear weapons”
