The Popocatépetl volcano explodes and spews "water vapor, volcanic gases and ash"

The Popocatépetl volcano has exploded again.

The National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) has detected "235 exhalations accompanied by water vapor, volcanic gases and ash" between Friday and Saturday.

The agency registered "a moderate explosion" at five in the morning, in addition to "six minor explosions", four between six in the afternoon and twelve at night on Friday and another two on the morning of this Saturday.

"Additionally, 62 minutes of low-amplitude and harmonic tremors and two volcanotectonic earthquakes were recorded today at 04:13 and 04:16, both with magnitude 1.4," the entity said in a statement.

The surrounding communities of San Nicolás de los Ranchos and Cuautlancingo have suffered a "slight ash fall."

Throughout the morning, a "constant emission of water vapor and volcanic gases towards the Northeast" has also been recorded.

Cenapred has placed the volcanic alert traffic light at "yellow phase two".

At 7:26 p.m., the volcano exploded again, spilling incandescent fragments on the slopes" and an "eruptive column close to three kilometers high with ash dispersion towards Puebla," according to the SkyAlert platform.
