A student who spoke to reporters outside the school said the suspect had been in a fight with another student last week and the late teacher had separated them.
"This kid told the other kid that he looked like a squirrel and a rat and he didn't like it and they started fighting," said Gabriel Livramento, 13, from the same classroom as the suspect.
He added that his classmate did not like the way his teacher had intervened to separate them and said that he was going to do something about it.
The attacker entered the institute on Monday wearing a skull mask and stabbed his teacher in the back, causing injuries to her head and torso, Livramento explained.
The entire classroom ran out after that, he added.
