The Constitution Committee headed by MK Simcha Rotman met this morning (Monday) to approve the change in the composition of the Committee for the Appointment of Judges for the second and third reading. The vote was postponed from last night following the fierce public reaction to the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Galant by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Before the debate, Rotman addressed the

crisis And to the call to stop the legislation, he said: "If we stop - we are telling the Israeli public 'there are elections, you will vote at the ballot box, but in the end a group of reservists and hit-and-runs who are ready to set the country on fire and harm everything that is sacred in the State of Israel will win and your vote is not worth it.'

The public message of such a decision is very dangerous."

The purpose of the bill in question, Basic Bill: The Judiciary, is to change the composition of the Committee for the Selection of Judges so that it will allow the coalition full control over the appointment of two judges to the Supreme Court in each term, and will also allow it to appoint the President of the Supreme Court with a simple majority.

The debate takes place after a long marathon of debates and thousands of votes on the reservations submitted by the members of the opposition in the Constitution Committee.

According to the bill that was softened by the coalition, the composition of the committee for selecting judges will appoint 11 members, and it will be divided into two: a committee for selecting judges for the Supreme Court, and a committee that will appoint judges in lower courts for the district and peace courts.

The committee that will discuss appointments to the supreme court will consist of three ministers, three Knesset members from the coalition, two Knesset members from the opposition and three supreme judges, including the president.

In each term, two appointments to the top will require a simple majority of only six committee members, so that the coalition will have full control over appointments.

In the third appointment, a simple majority will be required, but the appointment will be made with the consent of the representative of the opposition in the committee, and in the fourth appointment, the consent of the representative of the judges will be required.

The committee on appointments to the lower courts will consist of three judges who are the supreme president, the district president and the president of the peace court as well as coalition and opposition representatives, and a majority of seven out of 11 committee members will be required.

In addition, according to the proposal, the coalition will be able to appoint the supreme president with a simple majority as part of the two appointments that require a simple majority.

The proposal states that if the coalition appointed two judges to the Supreme Court in the current term, the Knesset was dissolved and Israel went to the elections, when a new Knesset was sworn in - the coalition could again appoint two judges with a simple majority as if the situation had completely reset.

In the debate that was interrupted last night, members of the Constitution Committee from the opposition sharply criticized the promotion of the proposal.

MK Gilad Karib from Labor described what was happening in the committee as "the potentization of the State of Israel", and accused the coalition of its members "endangering Israel's security and harming it". MK Yulia Milinovski from Israel Beitenu told the members of the Knesset from the coalition that they were "running amok". any language

She wondered: "Why didn't you appoint the cute daughter of the crime family Kadoshim from Herzliya as president of the Supreme Court after this proposal was approved, what would stop you?"

MK Simon Davidson of Mish Atid said: "History will ultimately judge what you do here, but when you cross the borders - there is no going back, and even if there is, it will be long and difficult.

You don't listen to the public that goes out en masse with great pain to the street, so what are you doing here?

What were you elected for?". MK Matan Kahana from the state camp said: "This will be a cry for generations of both sides."

MK Yoav Seglovitch Mish Atid added: "This whole event is crazy and promiscuous and the Minister of Defense of the State of Israel says so.

Don't let Netanyahu play with you, you have responsibility for the security of Israel." MK Ofer Kasif said: "If the legislation is not stopped and repealed - we will end up with bloodshed. The blood will be on your hands."

Demonstrations in Jerusalem, last night (Photo: Roni Kanfo)

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated last night against the legal revolution in dozens of centers across the country.

The demonstrations began spontaneously about an hour after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Galant, who on Saturday called for a halt to the legislation.

Among the main centers of the demonstrations were Beer Sheva, Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - where fierce clashes broke out between the demonstrators and the police, who were powerless in the face of the tens of thousands of protesters who blocked the Ayalon roads for many hours.
