The letter, dated March 24, is addressed to Olivier Véran, the government spokesperson.
Written by Yannick Morez, the diverse-right mayor of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), its purpose is explicit.
"Arson"
is written at the top of the document that
Le Figaro
was able to consult.
The city councilor wrote it two days after the flames ravaged two of his cars and part of his home.
According to the first elements of the investigation, it would be a voluntary act whose origin could be an incendiary cocktail.
In the preamble, the mayor wishes to remind the former Minister of Health of the subject which is creating a stir in this peaceful seaside resort on the Atlantic coast: “
This attack,

prejudging the investigation which will have to shed all the light on it

is part of a tense climate made of threats and intimidation, in particular in the context of the transfer and the perpetuation of a Cada [Reception center for asylum seekers, editor’s note] decided by the State.

"Minimization of facts"
This structure, which must be installed near a school, is strongly criticized by opponents -
"outside the town"
, underlines the municipality - in connection with extreme right movements or fundamentalist Catholics.
Some parents of students, not politicized, have also denounced this project.

We have denounced this context on many occasions, asking for support from the State, law enforcement and justice.
We didn't have it.

, criticizes Yannick Morez.
We were shocked by the attitude, the remarks and the minimization of the facts operated by the sub-prefect and the commander of the gendarmerie, taking refuge behind freedom of expression, during a meeting in town hall on this subject on February 10 .
In particular, they replied that filing a complaint 'would be useless' or that it was necessary to 'put these threats into perspective' which were not explicit enough, that it had nothing to do with the sequence which had led to the assassination of Samuel Paty.
However, the concern I mentioned unfortunately materialized and the consequences could have been dramatic.

"Lack of official condemnation"
Emphasizing that he has received
"numerous marks of support"
since the occurrence of what he describes as
a "criminal attack"
, the mayor of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins regrets the silence of the authorities on this subject:
"At the time where I write these lines, without even speaking of apologies, I cannot help but note the absence of official condemnation from the prefecture or the government, which has done so in the meantime for much less serious facts.
This Cada project is however a project imposed by the State, which does not defend it, and leaves the mayors to suffer the returns.
Yannick Morez also takes advantage of his missive to demand, beyond his personal case, increased consideration of the fears emanating from those targeted by intimidation.
“These facts are inadmissible and should not be underestimated or minimized.
The threats that we suffer, with my elected colleagues, members of associations or parents of students, must be taken seriously and sanctioned.
It is unacceptable that such acts occur and persist in a country like ours
,” he said.
In conclusion, he said he hoped, in this sense,
"concrete facts very quickly"
.
