End of life: Catholic bishops reaffirm their opposition to active assistance in dying

2023-03-28T15:30:57.675Z

The episcopate calls for a "true palliative dynamic, made of attention to each person in his unit and with his entourage".

The Catholic bishops reiterated their opposition to a possible legislative amendment towards a “

legitimation of euthanasia or assisted suicide

”, pleading for better “

management of dependency due to old age

”, Tuesday March 28 in Lourdes.

In a solemn declaration published on the occasion of their plenary assembly in Lourdes, the episcopate calls for a "

true palliative dynamic, paying attention to each person in his unit and with his entourage

", judging that palliative care has known a development that is certainly “

significant

” but “

still insufficient

”.

We hear very many carers assert vigorously that “the hand which takes care cannot in any case be the one which gives death”.

We hear several observers of our society, with various philosophical opinions and religious affiliations, warn against the injunction to give up life that the legal and economic ease of “active assistance in dying” would impose on fragile people

. , they add.

We hear the revolt, the anger, the feeling of injustice resounding in the face of suffering and death.

Conferences of Bishops of France

"

We hear the revolt, the anger, the feeling of injustice that resound in the face of suffering and death as calls for greater fraternity and as the search for hope (...), but in no case as a legitimization of euthanasia or assisted suicide

,” they say.

This is why the episcopate calls for "

the current debate on the end of life to constitute a positive opportunity for significant progress in support and management, in particular of dependence due to old age in our country

”.

Freedom “

can only unfold if the value of everyone's life is fully recognized and respected.

It is within this protective framework that it is advisable to implement all the possible ways of active help to live

”, they conclude.

A “

citizen’s convention

”, which brought together members drawn by lot, worked on these subjects for several months, and must issue an opinion in early April intended to advise the government.

Prevention of sexual violence

The bishops opened this plenary assembly on Tuesday with the aim of taking new measures on the “

functioning of the Church

” in order to prevent sexual violence, a “

priority

” subject.

These proposals relate to the training of seminarians, "

accompaniment of bishops or priests

" in their functions, the accompaniment of "

responsible

" in sexual assaults, the "

sharing of good practices in the face of reported cases

", or still part of the confession.

Many of them give shape and structure to processes already underway and give greater scope to decisions made.

Others are making new suggestions to us, which will no doubt call for work in our dioceses

”, continued the Archbishop of Reims.

"

We will work this (Tuesday) afternoon and tomorrow (Wednesday) to come up with proposals likely to be adopted

" at the end of the session, he added.

The episcopate will indeed have to decide, by vote, Thursday and Friday.

The fight against abuse is a priority subject (...).

He does not suffer from being postponed until later.

There is a dimension of urgency and the need to make decisions that go in the right direction

“, Estimated during a press point Alexandre Joly, bishop of Troyes.
