AMLO says the fire at the migrant center started during a mattress burning protest

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, affirmed this Tuesday that the fire in the migrant center of Ciudad Juárez the night before "had to do with a protest that they started after, we suppose, that they found out that they were going to be deported”.

"We still do not know the names and nationality of those who unfortunately lost their lives," he added, "what we do know is that they are migrants mainly from Central America and some from Venezuela."

"It's very sad," lamented the Mexican president, who assured that the Attorney General's Office is already investigating what happened.

The number of migrants killed in the fire in an immigrant center in Ciudad Juárez rises to 40

At least 40 migrants died and another 28 were injured in a fire that broke out shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at a center of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez, located on the Stanton-Lerdo International Bridge that connects the Mexican state of Chihuahua with the Texan city of El Paso, as reported by the Mexican authorities on Tuesday.

All the victims were adults from Central and South America, and were detained inside the premises, the INM explained in a statement.
