While France
“lacks places”
in administrative detention centers
“yet essential for deporting foreigners in an irregular situation”
, the mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi proposes the “urgent establishment
of a deported and temporary administrative detention center for a few months until the pressure is released on our territory”
, in a letter consulted by AFP and addressed to the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.
This new detention center would have 50 places, according to the town hall and would be added to the CRA already existing in Nice, at the Auvare barracks and which can accommodate 40 people.
The services of the city of Nice and the Metropolis
“ready to contribute to the logistics that would result from it”
, have identified
“three places that can meet the constraints”
, adds Christian Estrosi in this letter also signed by Anthony Borré, his first deputy.

Migration pressure
“We are working with the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes
(Bernard Gonzalez, Ed)
on long-term solutions.
However, the situation is too urgent and requires strong, immediate and concerted action”
, further believes the mayor of Nice who underlines that Nice and its metropolis are
“particularly impacted by this migratory pressure due to their geographical position and their proximity to the Italian border
.
Beyond the question of real estate or logistics, there is the question of human resources, according to a source familiar with the matter.
It takes 80 officials to take care of 40 people held in a CRA, according to this source.
This proposal from the mayor of Nice comes as the examination in the Senate of the immigration bill by Gérald Darmanin, criticized on the right as on the left, has been postponed.
