Point of anguish among the parents of toddlers in the region.
Traces of Listeria were found in an apple puree from the central kitchen of Mornant, in the mountains of Lyonnais, which supplies more than 300 crèches in 10 departments*, including that of the Rhône.
Ingestion of this bacterium can cause a disease called listeriosis, which is rare but fatal in 30 to 40% of cases, according to the Pasteur Institute.
The batch concerned included 2,300 meals, manufactured on March 6, delivered on March 7 and whose consumption deadline was set for March 9.
Traces of listeria were detected in the compotes received by a crèche in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon,
“as part of the regulatory self-checks”
, specify the state services.
The results of the analysis having been known on March 14, the children were therefore able to consume it between the 7th and the 9th.
No cases to date but a long incubation period
The services of the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Persons (DDPP) of the Rhône asked the company Ansamble, which manages the kitchen of Mornant, to warn the 304 establishments concerned.
And to inform parents with the health recommendations provided in this case.
Parents have received an information email warning them of the risk for their child of developing listeriosis.
This disease is said to be notifiable, because of the public health issues it entails.
Any doctor detecting it must therefore notify the health authorities.
No cases have yet been detected following the March 7 delivery.
But the incubation period, which varies from 10 to 28 days on average, runs in this case until May 2.
Hence the alert for parents, who must remain vigilant about the symptoms, especially since they may seem trivial.
Vigilance in case of fever, even low
“The disease usually results in a more or less high fever, accompanied by headaches and, sometimes, digestive disorders (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.), indicates the Ministry of Health
.
Neurological complications (meningitis, encephalitis) can occur and
jeopardize the vital prognosis
of the person affected.
Diagnosis is based on microbiological tests.
The disease is treated by prescribing antibiotics, which are all the more effective the earlier they are administered.
Mornant's kitchen was closed while waiting to know the origin of the contamination, which the research carried out to date has not made it possible to determine.
Meal preparation has been transferred to Ternay, specifies Ansamble, which manages around fifteen central kitchens in France for a total of 210,000 daily meals distributed across the country.
The DDPP specifies that a
“reinforced cleaning, disinfection and control plan”
must be carried out on the premises.
*The ten departments concerned by the delivery of this lot are mainly in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. These are Ain, Isère, Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. But also, beyond, the Côte d'Or, the Doubs and the Saône-et-Loire.
