The Spanish actress and businesswoman Ana Obregón, 68, was the mother by surrogacy of a girl who was born on March 20 at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Miami, news that caused a stir in Spain because it is a practice that

is banned in the country.

"The exciting images of Ana's happiness when leaving with her baby in her arms from the Miami hospital," says the magazine "Hola" on its cover on Wednesday when breaking the news about Ana Obregón's maternity through what is known as a "surrogate womb".

In the images you can see how the artist leaves the hospital with the baby in her arms,

sitting in a wheelchair, following the protocol of the health center, on which you can read the sign "Mother Baby Chariot" (cart for mother and baby).

The actress, who lost her son Alessandro to cancer in May 2020, when she was 27 years old

, carried out surrogate motherhood with absolute discretion.

"Only Ana; her sisters, Celia and Amalia, and Alessandro Lequio, the father of her son Aless, knew that the process was underway," the magazine publishes.

The pregnancy by surrogacy, which is not legal in Spain, occurred in June 2022

, "the same month that Aless would have turned 30," explains the magazine, which details that on March 18 Ana turned 68 when she already I was in Miami.

The news caused controversy in Spain since the publication of the magazine, since this practice is prohibited by law, and it was echoed even by members of the government.

The Ministers of Equality, Irene Montero, and of the Treasury, María Jesús Montero, expressed their rejection of this practice in statements offered in the halls of Congress, a position later joined by representatives of opposition parties.

The head of Equality assured that this practice is legally recognized in Spain as one more form of "violence against women" and asked not to forget the precarious situation of those who agree to lend their womb to gestate the children of others.

"There is a clear discrimination bias due to poverty," stressed Montero, one of the leaders of Unidas Podemos, one of the parties that make up the coalition government in Spain, while the Minister of Finance stressed that it is an "exploitation of the body of the woman".

María Jesús Montero recalled that at the beginning of the legislature, aspects related to registrations in the Civil Registry were modified to try to prevent the entry into Spain of children born by surrogacy in other countries, but she specified that "each specific case must be analyzed concrete form".

The only party that supports this practice, as long as there is no financial compensation for the surrogate mother, is Ciudadanos, a very minority group in parliament.

Deputy Edmundo Bal, from Ciudadanos, specified in the halls of Congress that his party defends this practice as something altruistic "in order to enable people who, for whatever reasons, cannot conceive children naturally, can form the family that you want or have in mind to form".
