Emmanuel Macron in Pif Gadjet: "The President of the Republic addresses everyone, except the active"

INTERVIEW – The Head of State gave an interview to readers of the children's magazine Pif on February 20. In an inflamed social context, the French could interpret it as a form of avoidance, explains David Desgouilles.

THE

FIGARO.

- Emmanuel Macron answered questions from readers of Pif magazine.

How to interpret this communication operation in the midst of social anger against its pension reform?

David DESGOUILLES.

-

I note that the President of the Republic is addressed to everyone, except to the working people.

Last week, he appeared in the 1 p.m. newspapers, watched mainly by retirees.

This time it is aimed at children.

However, the assets are massively opposed to his pension reform (93% in a recent poll).

Would it be exaggerated to see it as an avoidance strategy?

I would add that Emmanuel Macron now manages very often not to have a firm and resolute contradiction in front of him.

Last year, he could not avoid the traditional debate of the second round, which he also knew he would find there a Marine Le Pen playing in defense, scalded by that of 2017. But he refused any debate during the first-round campaign.

This man rather open to controversy and frontal exchange, in the first part of his political career, seems today curled up on himself, avoiding being put in difficulty by hostile people.

We could see caution or the desire to protect the presidential office.

But we can also see fear, quite simply.

Going to talk to children is sending this sign that the circle is complete.

David Desgouilles

Does it seem relevant to you?

The risk is that the French interpret it as avoidance, and fear, precisely.

Even they take it as arrogance.

The President of the Republic, his ministers, as well as the deputies of his camp have been accused of practicing infantilization, in particular during the health crisis.

On the subject of pension reform, they only have the word "pedagogy" in their mouths, as if it were so difficult to make their noble projects understood by an ignorant population, forgetting that disagreement in full knowledge of the facts is simply part of the democratic contract.

Going to talk to the children is to send this sign that the circle is complete: "Dad is talking to the children".

The problem is that it also helps to remember that,

unlike most of the assets he refuses to talk to, he has never raised children.

The process of disconnection from real life is thus fueled.

Clearly, on the simple level of “com”, this initiative does not seem welcome to me.

Pif, an emblematic character in the youth press, was created in 1948 by the Spanish cartoonist José Cabrero Arnal for the communist daily

L'Humanité

.

Would Picsou magazine have been more in tune with Macronist DNA?

There is no doubt that Éric Woerth or the Finance Inspectorate would not contradict you.

But the health crisis and the “whatever it takes” have been there.

I wonder if Balthazar Picsou would have validated the idea of paying the fictitious bills of restaurants, cinemas, theaters and other “non-essential” stores for whole months.

And here we point to the main pitfall of his pension reform.

Most French people have seen very well that Emmanuel Macron knew how to get "magic money" when he decreed the need for it.

And it will take time to forget it.
