Emblematic meeting place of the Croix-Rousse (Lyon 4th), the Gros Caillou now has a little brother.

A 1.5 meter piece of rock cleared in early March by the Coiro company in charge of road works for district heating, rue du Clos-Savaron.

An erratic block taken from the moraine, probably from the Pre-Alps, which would have appeared around 140,000 years ago, during the period of the great glaciations in the Lyon region.

This second pebble will also be exhibited in the 4th arrondissement, in the square Ninon-Valin, located a few meters from its discovery.

With this conservation, the municipality wishes to keep the memory of the soil and enlighten young and old on the natural causes that have shaped the site of the city for tens of thousands of years.

This discovery also testifies to the trace of a past glaciation which deserves to be preserved in this context of

global warming

”, indicates the city of Lyon in a press release.

The Gros Cailloux of Croix-Rousse installed since 1891

Lyon was covered by glaciers during the recent Riss, that is to say the penultimate glacial period, between 200,000 and 120,000 years ago.

This explains the presence of a glacial geological formation rich in limestone blocks at the top of the hills (the moraine).

At that time, mammoths

were walking

: one of them, discovered in the rise of Choulans, is exhibited at the Confluences museum

, ”explains the municipality.

The Gros Cailloux de la Croix-Rousse, a block of rock from the Alps, discovered during the drilling of the tunnel of the Croix-Paquet funicular, has been installed since 1891 on the plateau of the hill which bears the same name.
