US President Biden calls on Netanyahu to shelve the legal revolution (Twitter)
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today (Wednesday) that the alliance between Israel and the United States is "unquestionable" despite their differences.
This is after President Joe Biden harshly attacked the legal revolution promoted by the coalition and his call to stop it as soon as possible.
"The United States and Israel have had disagreements from time to time, but I want to assure you that the alliance between the largest democracy in the world and the strongest democracy in the heart of the Middle East - Israel - is unassailable. Nothing can change that," he said in a video speech he gave at the White House Democracies Summit.
Netanyahu, who announced on Monday the halting of the advancement of the legislation following the huge protests, referred in his speech to the talks that began between the coalition and the opposition.
"In Israel, we are in the midst of a lively public debate about democracy. I promoted a time-out that would allow the coalition and the opposition to sit down and reach a consensus. I think it is possible," said the Prime Minister.
According to him, "Several governments have expressed concern and I want to assure you - even in the midst of this public debate, we have a historic opportunity to strengthen democracy and restore the balance between the authorities and also to anchor basic rights in a national consensus. I think this is an opportunity that Israel has been waiting for. We need to move from protests to an agreement. I want to assure you that Israel was, is and always will be a vibrant democracy."
