While teams from the Department of Loire-Atlantique have just made traffic possible again on all the lanes of the Saint-Nazaire bridge on Tuesday afternoon, the community has quantified the extent of the repairs already carried out and to come.
They follow a demonstration by opponents of the pension reform on March 22.
During this,
"significant voluntary damage was committed"
according to the departmental council.
"Several pieces of equipment have been destroyed or are out of service, in particular two gates providing information to users (signage, dynamic track system), related equipment (technical cabinets, controls, cameras, barriers, etc.), as well as certain parts of the coated on the road and around roundabouts”

Emergency works
After these incidents, a diagnosis and an inspection of the structure were carried out in order to ensure that the safety conditions were met for the users of this longest bridge in France (3356 meters).

“remove the damaged gantries”

To carry them out,
"about fifty agents mobilized"

But other interventions should require much more time before everything returns to normal.
The return to service of the dynamic system regulating traffic on the three lanes
“could last several months”
, thus anticipates the community.
In the meantime,
"manual interventions will be necessary on site, carried out by teams from the Department's intervention center, to complete the marking and ensure the safety of users"
.

Almost 24 hours of complete closure
On March 22, traffic on the Saint-Nazaire bridge had been interrupted for about 24 hours.
Only rescue and emergency vehicles were able to use it during this time.
The other users - around 33,500 vehicles on average per day - had been forced to cross the Loire upstream, in particular via the Loire ferry service, the rotations of which had been increased.
On the night of March 22 to 23, teams from the Loire-Atlantique Department had allowed the reopening of traffic on one lane, in each direction, on the structure which spans the Loire estuary.
On Tuesday afternoon, the lane switching system was restored:
"The usual system of two lanes in one direction and one lane in the other, switching of the central lane depending on the timetable and the intensity of traffic, can therefore resume.”
