for "scheduled checks"
due to the colon operation he underwent in 2021, according to the Holy See.

had offered his usual general audience on Wednesdays
in Saint Peter's Square.
In July 2021, Jorge Bergoglio, then 84 years old, underwent surgery for a diverticular stenosis (narrowing) of the intestinal colon at the Gemelli polyclinic.

Surgeon Professor Sergio Alfieri, 55, performed the operation with the support of
a vast group of specialists.

operation for what the Vatican described as a narrowing of the large intestine.
In that intervention , 30 cm of intestine
was removed .
However, it was not necessary to resort to a colostomy.
