BRUSSELS - After 15 hours of negotiations, the EU institutions have reached an agreement on the new directive to promote and regulate

renewable energies

.

The Swedish presidency of the EU announced it with a Tweet.

The agreement on the new directive increases to 42.5% the EU target for 2030 for the share of final electricity consumption that will have to be covered by renewable sources.

The mandatory contribution of renewables rises not only from the current 32%, but also from what was proposed by the Commission in the 2021 climate package (40%).

With the RePower EU, the EU executive had proposed 45%.

Among the other elements of the agreement, according to Markus Pieper (EPP, Germany), rapporteur of the provision to the European Parliament, there is the acceleration of permits.

Biomass energy production

will remain 100% renewable

.

"A good day for Europe's energy transition", comments the German MEP.

By 2030, renewable energies are expected to contribute 49% of the energy used by buildings.

The agreement, which will have to be ratified by the European Parliament and the EU Council, provides for

binding objectives for transport

.

Member States will be able to choose between a target of at least 29% share of renewables in final energy consumption in the transport sector by 2030 or a target of 14.5% reduction of greenhouse gas intensity in transport thanks to to the use of renewable sources.

Renewables will also have to contribute to sector consumption with at least 5.5% of advanced biofuels (i.e. from non-food raw materials) and renewable fuels of non-biological origin (renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based synthetic fuels).

The contribution of low-emission hydrogen (i.e. made with nuclear power) will be counted as renewable, but with some limits.

The agreement provides for more stringent criteria for the production of energy from biomass, which however remain counted as renewable.

Member States will designate renewable energy acceleration areas where projects will benefit from simplified permits.

The facilities will be considered to be of "overriding public interest".

"I welcome the provisional agreement with the Parliament and the Council on an enhanced set of rules on renewable energy, we have reached an ambitious compromise and the new renewables directive is an important step in delivering the Green Deal and RePowerEU".

So in a tweet the European Commissioner for Energy

Kadri Simson

.

“More Renewable Energy:

Greater Energy Sovereignty; Fewer Greenhouse Gases; Faster Green Transition

.”

The president of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola writes it on social media, congratulating "on the important agreement on the directive on renewable energies" with the negotiator of the Eurochamber, the MEP Markus Pieper, and the Swedish presidency of the Council of the EU.

According to Metsola, it is "a deal that demonstrates ambition and commitment," says Metsola.
