Hyaluronic acid is one of the star elements of beauty routines for the skin and it is also in what is known as aesthetic medicine.

But the latest trend is in supplements that incorporate this element orally and claim to contribute to making the skin look healthier from the inside.

When you think about beauty routines, it is almost impossible not to imagine the presence of a dropper with vitamin C, retinol or Nicotinamide.

But, in that set of ingredients that forever changed the world of skincare, hyaluronic acid is the star element of recent years.

Naturally produced by our body and with a sticky consistency, hyaluronic acid is found especially in the eye area, joints and skin.

So, from helping people move correctly (in its role as a lubricant) to being essential for hydration (thanks to its enormous water retention capacity), the key fact is that a quarter teaspoon of this substance retains -approximately- 5 liters of water.

“Hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant for tissues, helping to hydrate and reduce flaking of dry and damaged skin, increasing its volume and density, minimizing aging and the appearance of wrinkles”, explains Raúl Coraglia Biochemist and Pharmacist, co-technical director of Natufarma SA,

Belu Garrido -cosmiatrist, trainer and skin influencer- shares her experience in the use of this product: “Hyaluronic acid is an active ingredient that is very easy to use and to combine with many others.

It is quite tolerable for practically all skin types (even sensitive), as well as being very effective and the result is almost immediate”.

It is because of these unique qualities that the world of cosmetics appropriated it and transformed it into serums, moisturizing creams, and even facial cleansing cloths.

However, it is hyaluronic acid in tablets that is really changing the scenario by continuing to reinforce -from aesthetic medicine- the importance of working on external beauty first from the inside.

Oral hyaluronic acid: benefits from the inside out

For many years now, Asian aesthetic medicine has brought to the market what are known as nutricosmetics;

products about which relatively little was said in countries like Argentina.

With an impact from both aesthetics and health, the consumption of oral hyaluronic acid already has several studies behind it that support its benefits.

For example, in 2017 the results of a Japanese investigation were published, showing that the intake of hyaluronic acid for 12 weeks significantly improved the brightness of the skin as well as reduced the wrinkles of those who participated.

That same year, in

the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine

, the results of another study were shared in which women between the ages of 45 and 60 took this supplement for a total of 40 days.

The benefits were similar: skin elasticity and texture improved, wrinkles were reduced, and skin hydration increased by up to 24%.

The recognition that this compound achieved thanks to scientific research and the validation of specialists around the world, also positioned it in Argentina as a key product of aesthetic medicine: "This is because it has the power to compensate for the natural loss of acid hyaluronic acid in our body, both in joint wear and in skin health”, explains Laura Szafirsten, dermatologist and specialist in dermatological aesthetics.

“It is essential to choose reliable brands and know that it is not comparable with hyaluronic acid that comes in serum or cream format, since they have different effects.

While our digestive system absorbs the drinkable, the serum only rebuilds the epidermal barrier”, adds the doctor.

How to incorporate it orally into our daily routine

Hyaluronic acid in tablets is available free of charge and is available in all pharmacies in the country, but it is always essential that if you have any questions, consult your family doctor.

The most recommended are the supplements that are combined with elastin or vitamin C as they can improve elasticity and absorption.

With a recommended intake of 1 pill per day (ideally away from meals).

Among the main properties of hyaluronic acid are maintaining skin moisture levels, increasing skin volume and density (thus minimizing aging and the appearance of wrinkles), and increasing collagen production, essential for keeping skin firm and smooth. The key, like any treatment, is to be consistent in order to obtain satisfactory results and enjoy the benefits that hyaluronic acid in tablets gives to the skin, but of course accompany it with a balanced diet and healthy habits (no smoking, little alcohol, drinking water, sleep well).
