The murder of 12-year-old Luise shook Germany - even the lowering of the criminal responsibility is being demanded. New figures now show how child and juvenile delinquency really is.

The murder of 12-year-old Luise shook Germany - even the lowering of the criminal responsibility is being demanded.

New figures now show how child and juvenile delinquency really is.

Berlin – Now it's official: Germany has become less secure.

The number of crimes in the Federal Republic has increased significantly - especially among people under the age of 14.

This emerges from the current police crime statistics presented by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) on Thursday in Berlin.

Last year, the authorities registered a total of around 5.6 million criminal offenses.

An increase of 11.5 percent.

It is the highest level since 2017.

The development in suspected children and young people is even more dramatic.

Here, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reported 93,095 offenses – an increase of 35.5 percent.

This reverses the positive trend of the past few years.

A statement that SPD Minister Faeser delivered to the capital's press: the corona pandemic.

Lockdowns have brought social life to a standstill.

That's over now.

There are more opportunities for criminal offenses again.

BKA boss wants to monitor the situation – the opposition is putting pressure on

A look at 2019 - the last year before Corona - supports this explanation.

Then the increase in crime is only 3.5 percent.

"We are a safe country," said Faeser.

And yet: The increase in child and youth violence is obvious.

BKA President Holger Münch said that poverty, domestic violence and stress increase the risk of children becoming criminals.

"Such factors have been added in recent years, for example due to the pandemic," said Münch.

The development is not yet alarming.

But you have to watch them closely.

The opposition in the Bundestag does not want to wait any longer.

"The increase in cases in crime statistics, including among children and young people, is worrying," said the Union's family policy spokeswoman, Silvia Breher, to the

Munich

newspaper

IPPEN.MEDIA

.

Saxony-Anhalt's Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) had previously made a similar statement.

"The development should not be downplayed," she told the daily newspaper

Die Welt

.

NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) wants to put the topic of child and juvenile delinquency on the agenda of the next conference of interior ministers.

CDU family expert Breher told our editors: “The previous options for preventive measures are obviously reaching their limits and are not enough.

This is also shown by the murder of Luise”.

After the murder of Luise: Prevention work necessary - Breher criticizes the traffic light coalition

The murder of 12-year-old Luise in Freudenberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, recently caused bewilderment.

Two girls, aged 12 and 13, confessed to stabbing Luise to death.

According to the investigating authorities, the three knew each other.

As a result, the killing triggered a new debate about the age limit for criminal responsibility.

Breher emphasized that "an honest and balanced debate about a possible lowering of the age of criminal responsibility" is needed.

The age of criminal responsibility is currently 14 years.

"Targeted measures and help are needed, such as good and adequate prevention work right from the start," said the CDU politician.

A point that Münch and Faeser also mentioned on Thursday in Berlin.

However, Breher accused the government of failings: the commitment of the traffic light left "a lot to be desired in these areas".

Faeser, on the other hand, explained that we knew "in which areas we have to act."

Crime among young people: Pornographic content is becoming a trend

A closer look at the figures published on Thursday shows that the most common suspected acts among children and young people were theft, physical harm, property damage and drug-related offences.

The statistics also showed that schoolchildren are increasingly sharing child pornographic videos and photos with each other via apps.

In terms of distribution, acquisition, possession and production of youth pornography (+ 32 percent) and child pornography (+ 7 percent), the offenses increased significantly compared to previous years.

According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the trend that children and young people often do not even know that this is punishable plays a role here.

In certain cases, the Federal Minister of the Interior therefore appealed for decriminalization.

What worries both Interior Minister Faeser and BKA boss Münch: the increase in violence against security and rescue workers.

The statistics count 1.15 million victims.

"It shows the brutality that exists in our society," said Faeser.

Only one thing can help: consistent punishment.
