Four police officers were killed on Thursday by an explosive device placed on the side of a road in northwestern Pakistan, authorities said, in an attack claimed by the Pakistani Taliban TTP.

The device exploded as the police were riding in an armored vehicle to assist beleaguered colleagues at a police station in Lakki Marwat district.

The four men were victims of "

a planned act of terrorism

", local police officer Muhammad Ashfaq told AFP.

Among the victims is a senior officer, Iqbal Mohmand.

The attack was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban's Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who accused Mr Mohmand of being responsible for the deaths of fighters.

"War on Terror"

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared his "

sorrow

" on Twitter and praised the "

unforgettable sacrifices

" of the police "

in the war against terrorism

".

Lakki Marwat district is located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province which is considered as the base of TTP.

This organization increasingly targets the Pakistani police, accusing the security forces of carrying out extrajudicial executions of combatants.

Attacks have increased since the Afghan Taliban captured Kabul in August 2021, with Islambad claiming they are being carried out from the neighboring country.

On January 30, more than 80 police officers were killed when an assailant detonated his explosive vest at a mosque inside a police building in Peshawar, in the northwest of the country.

Appeared in Pakistan in 2007, the TTP is distinct from the Afghan Taliban but shares a fundamentalist Islamist ideology with the latter.
