French President Emmanuel Macron will tell Chinese leaders next week that it is "

essential to refrain

" from supporting Russia's war effort in Ukraine, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said on Thursday.

During this visit to China by Emmanuel Macron, accompanied for part of his stay by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, "

we will remind (in Beijing) that it is essential to refrain from any action that could allow Russia to support its war effort

”, declared the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Vilnius, during a joint press conference with her Lithuanian counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis.

It is in the interest of all countries (...) that Russian aggression fail.

Catherine Colonna, Minister of Foreign Affairs

China, which has never denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine, proposed in February a "

peace plan

" to end the war, which has lasted for more than a year, but the United States and Europe remain skeptical about Beijing's ability to play a mediating role.

The French president will send China "

clear messages

" so that "

it reaffirms its attachment to international law and respect for the principles of the Charter

" of the United Nations, indicated Catherine Colonna.

According to her, "

it is in the interest of all countries (...) that Russian aggression fails

".

For the European Union, the future of relations with China will largely depend on Beijing's attitude towards the "

Putin war

" in Ukraine, warned, for its part, Thursday Ursula von der Leyen.

Washington, meanwhile, is warning Beijing against the temptation to deliver weapons to Moscow.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made a grand visit to Moscow last week.

During her visit to Lithuania, Ms Colonna is due to visit the Siauliai base where French soldiers are completing their mission of surveillance of the Baltic airspace, assumed on a rotational basis by various NATO countries.
