Visitors to the Hellabrunn Zoo are currently rubbing their eyes in amazement: the barriers at the Siebenbrunner Straße car park are gone. We explain what that means.

Visitors to the Hellabrunn Zoo are currently rubbing their eyes in amazement: the barriers at the Siebenbrunner Straße car park are gone.

We explain what that means.

Modern times at the Hellabrunn Zoo car park: The barriers at the P2 car park on Siebenbrunner Straße have been removed since yesterday.

However, this does not mean that zoo visitors will be able to park for free in the future; rather, a new, barrier-free parking system has been installed at the site.

Munich: At Hellabrunn Zoo, the license plate number is now automatically recorded

It works like this: When entering the vehicle, the license plate number is automatically recorded.

A parking ticket is therefore no longer necessary.

Payment is made after visiting the zoo and before exiting the car park - either with the "Easy Park" app on your cell phone or at the machine.

There, the person parking must enter their license plate number for identification.

After paying, you have 20 minutes to leave the parking lot – the number plate is read again.

Incidentally, the new regulation only applies to car park P2.

The P1 car park on Tierparkstrasse is managed by the Bavarian Red Cross. A car park attendant sits here and collects the fees.

The hope: fewer traffic jams when looking for a parking space at Munich Zoo

Zoo director Rasem Baban hopes that the new system at car park P2 will reduce traffic jams when driving in and out - after all, you won't have to slow down in the future.

"Especially now that the weather is getting nicer again, we can see from the high volume of traffic how important a modern parking system is for us as a zoo," says Baban.

Incidentally, when it comes to technology, the zoo works with a Munich company, Peter Park System GmbH.

Its managing director Maximilian Schlereth is pleased about the cooperation - and allays any concerns about data protection: "Detailed queries are only made to the Federal Motor Transport Authority if there is a parking violation, such as non-payment of the fee or exceeding the maximum parking time of 24 hours."

Tierpark boss on parking costs: "The price of six euros for 24 hours remains the same"

For many visitors, the most important question is likely to be the cost.

Nothing will change here, as zoo boss Baban clarifies: "The price of six euros for 24 hours remains the same." Severely disabled people can still park free of charge - there are a limited number of disabled parking spaces available on both parking lots.

However, it seems advisable to try parking lot P1 first: Parking there is free of charge with visible evidence.

At the barrier-free car park P2, the corresponding proof must be sent to the parking service provider by e-mail, stating the vehicle registration number - a somewhat higher effort.
