During this visit to China by Emmanuel Macron, accompanied for part of his stay by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, "

we will remind (in Beijing) that it is essential to refrain from any action that could allow Russia to support its war effort

”, declared the French Foreign Minister in Vilnius, during a joint press conference with her Lithuanian counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis.

China, which has never denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine, proposed in February a "

peace plan

" to end the war, which has lasted for more than a year, but the United States and Europe remain skeptical about Beijing's ability to play a mediating role.

The French president will send China "

clear messages

" so that "

it reaffirms its attachment to international law and respect for the principles of the Charter

" of the United Nations, indicated Catherine Colonna.

According to her, "

it is in the interest of all countries (...) that Russian aggression fails

".

Fugitive father of teenage girl hostile to military offensive arrested in Belarus

A Russian, separated from his 13-year-old daughter for a drawing against the offensive in Ukraine that she had done in college, and who had fled before being sentenced to two years in prison, was arrested in Belarus, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday.

Alexei Moskaliov, 54, was "

arrested by the Belarusian police

" near the capital Minsk "

at the request

" of the Russian authorities, the Belarusian Interior Ministry said, quoted by the agencies.

Emblematic of the repression against those who oppose the conflict in Ukraine, the case of Alexei Moskaliov, separated from his daughter Maria, a 13-year-old schoolgirl whom he raised alone, arouses great emotion in Russia.

The affair began when Maria Moskaliova drew a picture in class showing missiles heading towards a woman and a child with a Ukrainian flag.

The school principal immediately alerted the police and the schoolgirl was placed in a home, while the father was placed under house arrest in early March.

On Tuesday, a court sentenced Maria Moskaliov to two years in prison for "

discrediting

" the army.

But, in the process, the authorities announced that Maria Moskaliov had escaped from his house arrest and was therefore a fugitive.

A letter written by Maria Moskaliova in which she said she supported her father added to the emotion after being made public on Wednesday.

I love you very much, you are not guilty of anything, I will always be on your side,

” wrote the young girl, who was placed in a home and banned from any telephone contact with her father.

Another trial is to be held on April 6 to decide whether or not to restrict Maria Moskaliov's parental rights.

Russia: an American journalist in detention for “espionage”

Russia on Thursday remanded an American journalist from the

Wall Street Journal

whom it accuses of espionage, an unprecedented case in the recent history of the country in the context of increased repression since the offensive against Ukraine.

The arrest of Evan Gershkovich was announced Thursday by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Kremlin claimed that he had been caught in “

flagrante delicto

”, without substantiating his accusations.

This case comes at the height of tensions between the United States and Russia linked to the conflict in Ukraine, and Washington accuses Moscow of detaining several of its citizens for political reasons.

The journalist's lawyer, Daniil Berman, said he was unable to attend the hearing on Thursday.

The only details available at this stage: the FSB announced that it had "

thwarted an illegal activity

" by arresting Evan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, in the Urals, on an unspecified date.

The Russian security services say they suspect him of "

espionage for the benefit of the United States

", accusing him in particular of having collected information " on a company of the

Russian

military-industrial complex ".
