One year to the day after the implementation of the 30 km/h city, the municipality of Lyon has just drawn up an initial assessment of its new speed limit.
According to indicators, between 2019 and 2021, the municipality has seen a 22% drop in accidents and a 40% drop in the number of hospitalized injuries.
Figures to look at, however, over time, the year 2019 having been particularly accident-prone.
According to data from the city, the general speed has generally dropped, even on the lanes that have remained at 50 km/h.
Regarding controls, 1276 were carried out in one year for 554 reports drawn up.

Christophe Spaeter, director of municipal police who came with his staff for a control operation over Herbouville in Lyon this Thursday noon.
Barely arrived on the spot, the municipal police officers are already reported on the GPS applications.

That's why we rarely stay more than 30 minutes in the same place
," continues the director, who explains that he uses the data from these applications to identify the areas most "
at risk
".

In the whole of the metropolis of Lyon, where eighteen cities of all political colors have adopted the principle of 30 km/h, accidents have decreased by 17% between the same years and the number of people hospitalized by 21%.
The number of people killed has fallen by 41%.

”, assures Fabien Bagnon, vice-president in charge of travel in Greater Lyon.
In this sense, the city of Lyon has embarked on a "

" and hopes that two-thirds of the municipalities that make it up will pass through the city at 30 km/h by 2026. Regarding the city of Lyon, it does not currently plan to pass new streets of 50 to 30km / h.
At the same time, the city of Lyon and the metropolis are putting pressure on the State to obtain the installation of fixed speed cameras to "
enforce the new speed limits
".

This is the case in London where 700 speed cameras will be in place by 2024, and in Brussels where 90 speed cameras are in place and 60 additional fixed speed cameras will be deployed by 2024
”, explains the municipality.
Twenty educational radars have already been installed by Lyon Metropolis.
According to statistics, a speed of 30 km/h reduces the risk of death of a pedestrian struck by 10% compared to 80% at 50 km/h.
Last year, five people died on the roads of the city of Lyon.
