The show belongs to the pantheon of French TV.

Unique in its genre,

“Le Grand Échiquier”

was able to combine, from 1972 to 1989, intellectual rigor and light discussion, cutting-edge artists and popular stars, classics and variety.

At the time, Yves Montand or Lino Ventura were famous enough to unite millions of French people.

But there is another explanation for this success: Jacques Chancel mastered the art of asking questions.

The gentleman interviewer was cultured enough not to trap them, but to get his guests to deliver answers he didn't always know he had.
