Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso said he was "

outraged

" on Thursday after the Constitutional Court authorized his impeachment trial the day before for alleged wrongdoing.

"

Democracy is strengthened by more democracy, that's why I respect the decision of the Constitutional Court, even if I don't agree with it

," Guillermo Lasso, 67, told national television.

Embezzlement

"

It bothers me, it offends me, it makes me indignant that people are trying to murder my reputation and that of my home

," said Guillermo Lasso, head of the Latin American country since May 2021, believing that the trial “

has neither head nor tail

”.

On Wednesday, the Constitutional Court of Ecuador authorized Congress to open an impeachment trial against the right-wing president, accused of embezzlement in the management of the Ecuadorian oil fleet (Flopec).

By a majority of six votes to three, the magistrates validated the request for a trial requested by the National Assembly, while rejecting another request for "

embezzlement

".

Guillermo Lasso will have to present his defense before the unicameral Parliament, where his detractors will have to obtain a majority of two thirds - that is 92 votes out of 137 - to obtain his dismissal.

Opponents of Guillermo Lasso are calling for his departure after a website revealed the existence of a system of alleged corruption set up within public companies by a brother-in-law of the president, Danilo Carrera.

The opposition in Parliament considered that Guillermo Lasso had been warned of the existence of this device and that he had not acted to stop it.

The deputies had already tried in June 2022 to dismiss Guillermo Lasso.

But the opposition, divided, had failed to gather enough votes.

The head of state argued that the case for which he will be prosecuted took place between 2018 and 2020, when he was not president.

However, he is accused of having been informed of a contract detrimental to Ecuador and of not having intervened in time at the start of his mandate.

A former representative of the presidency in the body responsible for administering public companies, Hernan Luque, as well as the businessman Ruben Cherres, a close friend of Danilo Carrera under investigation for drug trafficking, are also involved in this case.
