With an increasingly restrictive
exchange rate
, Argentines have already learned that when buying dollars or making purchases abroad, the cost to face is always much higher than the
official price
.
The billboards of the banks insist on reporting an exchange rate that seems from another era -this Monday, April 3, it was
$217 per dollar-
, but the truth is that the common people end up spending
nearly double
to access dollars .
Those who can still acquire US$200 per month for
home banking
, for example, pay them
65% more expensive
(at $358 each).
And when
spending with a card
abroad, there are even stronger surcharges:
75%
for the so-called "tourist dollar" ($380) and
100%
for the "Qatar dollar" ($434).
For its part, in the Stock Market, each dollar now ends up costing around
$397
with the MEP operation;
and in the informal or blue market, no less than
$392
.
The trap, however,
has some exceptions
.
And although they are very few, there are purchases in dollars that can still
be paid in pesos
at the official price.
Yes, at only $217 on the dollar.
Card purchases abroad: which ones are settled in the official dollar
For some operations, instead of the "card" dollar or the "Qatar" the official one governs.

The general rule indicates that, when using the card in stores and websites abroad, expenses in foreign currency will be pesified at the official price
plus 30%
of the "
PAIS tax
" (which drops to 8% for digital services) and
45 %
tax advance (Profits or Personal Assets).
In addition, if the consumptions add up to more than US$ 300 in the month, an extra perception
of
25%
will be added
to the account of Personal Goods.
However, there are certain expenses abroad that, according to the regulations,
are not affected
by the surcharges.
Among them are:
-
Health benefits
and
medicines
.
-Purchases of
books
in any format.
-Use of
educational platforms
and
software
for educational purposes.
-Purchase of land transport tickets for passengers to
neighboring countries
.
-Purchase of tickets to travel to the
Malvinas
, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands.
These and other items
were excluded
from the PAIS Tax.
And therefore, they are not affected by the 45% and 25% perceptions, which are applied to expenses incurred by the PAIS tax.
Thus, when carrying out this type of expenses, what corresponds according to the tax experts is that they are charged at the
official price
, without additions.
If the bank
still applies the surcharges
-as usually happens-, you can
claim
by presenting the vouchers (ticket, invoice, ticket, etc.).
"When the collection practiced
does not correspond
, the refund
of the tax may be requested
from the collection agent, attaching the evidence that justifies the request," clarifies the AFIP on its website.
For international travelers, the dollar "free shop"
In the Duty Free, the chance to buy in the official dollar is even announced in the gondolas.

In "tax free" stores in
Argentina
, such as those in Ezeiza and other international airports, travelers can
pay in pesos
by converting the dollar price of each product at the
official exchange rate
.
These businesses allow you to pay for your exclusive merchandise (technology, perfumes, chocolates, alcoholic beverages and more), both in
cash
and with debit and credit
cards
, without surcharges of 30%, 45% or 25%.
What the Government
no longer allows
, since July 2022, is to finance consumption in installments.
A key point is that purchases in Argentine free shops can be affected by a 50% customs tax, which is applied when the amount spent exceeds the excess
of
each passenger (or that of the family group as a whole), and only on the excess amount.
When returning to Argentina by
plane
or by
sea
, there is currently a franchise of
US$ 500
for what is purchased in the
arrival
free shop .
On the other hand, when arriving by land or by river, this benefit does not apply, except in
Puerto Iguazú
.
