Two workers died Monday in an accident that occurred at construction sites at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the airport, said the two workers were trapped under construction rubble around 11 a.m., The Associated Press reported.

A spokesman for the city's Fire Department said it happened in a ditch near the airport's busy Terminal 7.

About 60 firefighters worked to pull workers out of the trench, the Fire Department said.
Both workers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their names were not immediately released.
The Port Authority reported in a press release that it will carry out a thorough investigation.
Flight operations were not affected, the authority added.
