Iran on Wednesday welcomed the call made the day before by the United States to support a political process to end the war in Yemen.

Tehran described as “

satisfactory

” the statements made Tuesday by the American special envoy for Yemen, Timothy Lenderking.

The latter said that Washington would like "

to see the Iranians express their support for the political process that we hope will come

".

He also called on Tehran to stop supplying "

weapons to the Houthis

", the rebels fighting against the government, which Iran denies.

Iran supports peace

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani reacted on Wednesday by saying that his country has supported “

the peace process since the first day of the war in Yemen

”.

On Sunday, the UN special envoy for Yemen stressed that the truce concluded a year ago was still largely respected, despite its expiration in October.

Its "

most important promise is its ability to relaunch a political process aimed at a comprehensive and lasting end to the conflict

", added Hans Grundberg.

The announcement on March 10 of an agreement between Riyadh - which has supported a military coalition supporting the Yemeni government since 2015 - and Tehran - which supports the Houthi rebels - for the restoration of their diplomatic relations after seven years of rupture raised hopes appeasement in Yemen.
