The drunk driver who struck and killed
Elena Alonso,
a 91-year-old retiree, in early January 2021 in
Temperley
, will remain at large.
This was ordered by the Correctional Court No. 3 of the
Lomas de Zamora Judicial Department,
confirming a
suspended sentence of three years in prison and 10 years of disqualification
from driving vehicles for Federico Nicolás Ríos, the defendant for the act.
The court validated, after the abbreviated trial, the agreement between the defense of Ríos and the Functional Unit of Instruction and Trial (UFIJ) No. 10 of Lomas de Zamora, in charge of the prosecutor María Delia Recalde.
The man was found guilty of the charge of "aggravated manslaughter by illegal driving of a motor vehicle
under the influence of alcohol and drugs
and for having fled", of which he had been accused.
The event for which Ríos was convicted occurred on January 2, 2021 in the town of
Temperley
, Lomas de Zamora district and gained greater importance due to the shocking images captured by a security camera.
Elena Alonso was 91 years old and was hit by a 27-year-old driver.
In them you can see the moment when Alonso gets off the sidewalk, at the corner of Garibaldi and Scalabrini Ortiz -which at that time did not have any type of speed limiter, such as traffic lights or donkey backs- and, as soon as he steps on the pavement of the road is run over by the Volkswagen Gol Trend driven by Ríos, which
continues its march and flees the place without reducing the high speed it was bringing.

flew through the air and suffered injuries that would cause her death a few hours later,
after being treated at the scene by medical personnel from two ambulances and police personnel, and transferred to the Gandulfo de Lomas de Zamora Hospital.
After the driver was identified and apprehended by members of Lomas Police Station No. 3 (Temperley), an expert determined that at the time of the incident he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.80 grams per liter, in addition to
"
the presence of
cocaine and marijuana
”.
The arrest of Ríos after having escaped from the scene of the incident, could be carried out thanks to the fact that a witness identified him.
“About 20 minutes after everything happened, he goes around the corner again and, when he sees the ambulances and police cars,
he runs away because a man shouts 'that's the car!'
At that moment, he leaves at full speed, the Police ask for support and grab him," said Omar Albor, the victim's son.

“My mom was destroyed.
She had broken ribs, a broken pelvis, blows to the head, she had cuts everywhere ”, was Albor's stark description.
“He was never arrested and the car was returned to him the next day.
The images from the cameras were provided by me, I requested them and provided them, the prosecution did not do so, "he complained in relation to the initial stage of the investigation.

Four months after the event and after several marches and demands from Elena's neighbors, relatives and relatives, the Municipality of Lomas de Zamora installed traffic lights on Garibaldi street.
