BRUSSELS - During today's Atlantic Council, the allies "decided to offer a multi-year support program to Ukraine, in order to strengthen Kiev's armed forces, their interoperability and the path towards NATO standards, since the future of 'Ukraine is within the Euro-Atlantic family."
NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said this, specifying that at the moment the allies are meeting "immediate needs" while now it is necessary to "strengthen institutions, standards and doctrine" to support the path towards NATO in Kiev.
"2% of GDP for defense must not be a goal in the distant future but a strong commitment, so that 2% is really the minimum, and I expect clear language on this at the Vilnius summit", added the Norwegian politician.
Also "the issue of migration was part of the discussion - Stoltenber said -, we help the efforts of individual allies and the EU, we have a NATO naval presence in Turkey and we work with partners in the Middle East and North Africa" "We intend to strengthen cooperation with Tunisia and Mauritania - he added - to address the causes of migration, strengthening the institutions of these countries and guaranteeing stability".
On the subject, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had a bilateral conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the NATO ministerial underway in Brussels.
In fact, Tajani and Blinken, as far as we learn, discussed the challenges that come from the southern quadrant - it is one of the topics on the agenda of the Atlantic Council - and in particular the Tunisian situation.
"During today's meeting the immigration issue and Tunisia were discussed, I found attention from the other ministers because the alliance must also deal with the southern front. Next week I will meet the Tunisian foreign minister in Rome and we will discuss of all the questions, I reiterated the importance of giving the funds of the International Monetary Fund to Tunisia, even in tranches, to ensure that the reforms are implemented", Tajani commented on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting.
"Within NATO there is certainly concern for the stability of the area and for the infiltrations of Wagner".
