A girl (10) was found dead in a children's home in Wunsiedel.

Three boys are the focus of the investigation.

What happened is still unclear.

Update, Wednesday, 7 p.m.:

The sponsor of the children's home, in which a ten-year-old was found dead, wants to work through the events with the help of a crisis team.

In this situation, the young residents of the youth welfare facility in Wunsiedel needed familiar people who would continue to take care of them, the Catholic youth welfare office of the Diocese of Regensburg (KJF) announced on Wednesday.

"They need the opportunity to ask any questions they have, and they need child- and age-appropriate answers."

The girl was found dead in a room by staff at the facility on Tuesday.

The emergency doctor could only determine the death of the girl.

According to initial findings, the investigators assumed third-party negligence.

Two boys aged 11 and a 16-year-old are the focus of the investigations.

Security circles spoke of indications that the three boys were involved in an incident that led to the girl's death.

However, it is unclear to what extent this involvement was the cause of the girl's death and whether it could have been an accident.

Shock after the death of a girl in Wunsiedel: crisis team formed

The church sponsor reported that people within the KJF were shocked.

A crisis team was immediately formed in the facility to catch the children and young people.

"They must be accompanied carefully and individually in the acute crisis situation and in the following weeks and months so that they can process the traumatizing event." Experts from other facilities in the area were also included in the crisis team.

According to the responsible body, around 90 children and young adults between the ages of 3 and 19 are cared for in the St. Josef children's and youth welfare center in Wunsiedel.

The staff of the house also consists of about 90 employees.

According to the KJF, it has a total of 70 facilities with a total of 4,500 employees.

The three boys, who are the focus of investigators after the death of a ten-year-old in a child and youth welfare facility in Wunsiedel, were not initially taken into police custody.

The German Press Agency learned this from security circles on Wednesday.

Instead, they are in a youth protection facility.

Security circles spoke of indications that the three underage boys were involved in an incident that led to the girl's death.

However, it is unclear to what extent this involvement was the cause of the girl's death and whether it could have been an accident.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann was "stunned" by the incident (see previous update).

The city of Wunsiedel is also in shock.

"We can't believe it," said the deputy mayor, Manfred Söllner, on Wednesday.

According to Söllner, it is a church institution that has existed in the Upper Franconian city for at least half a century.

"We only ever hear positive things about the facility." Although what is happening in the facility is still unclear, there has not been much speculation in the city so far.

Neither do the police want to say at the moment in which part of the facility the ten-year-old girl was housed.

The St. Josef child and youth welfare center in Wunsiedel consists of several areas.

There are three curative education day groups in which children of very different ages are cared for.

There are also six groups of home children of different ages.

Three for young people to young adults, two of which are housed as residential groups outside of Wunsiedel.

There are also two mixed groups with young people and children from the age of two and three (group Elisabeth and group Regenbogen) and a group exclusively for children (group sunshine).

The ten-year-old could have been in all three groups.

Whether the alleged perpetrators and victims come from the same group or from different groups, whether the perpetrators were housed in the facility at all - all this is not yet known.
