The Schnappenkirche or St. Wolfgang auf dem Schnappenberg stands at an altitude of 1100 m on the Schnappenberg in Marquartstein in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein.

It is dedicated to St. Wolfgang of Regensburg and belongs to the parish of Staudach-Egerndach.

A large contingent of rescuers from the police and mountain rescue services are looking for the missing person

According to the police, 20 mountain guards were on duty.

There was also a police helicopter, two mountain rescue dog handlers and the mountain rescue service's technical bus with a drone.

The search continued into the night of Good Friday.

Then, around 12:45 a.m. on Good Friday, the rescuers made the sad discovery.

Sad certainty: Missing hiker lies dead in rough terrain

The missing man lay dead on a steep slope interspersed with forest and rock.

According to initial investigations, the 58-year-old lost his footing on the so-called Mittersteig and fell 40 meters into the abyss.

He then died from injuries sustained in the fall.

Rescue on the steep slope very demanding for emergency services

The terrain where the missing person came to rest was extremely impassable.

The rescue therefore turned out to be very demanding.

Volunteer rescuers, assisted by a police mountain guide, fought their way down the bluff and finally recovered the body around 2 a.m.

The police write in conclusion: "The night operation was very demanding for everyone involved due to the difficult circumstances."
