Asked by the business daily whether to copy this radical measure adopted at the end of March by the Italian Personal Data Protection Authority, Jean-Noël Barrot answers bluntly: “No

This authority “
first wonders if ChatGPT complies with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).
In my opinion, he does not respect it
, ”explained the minister.
“
The question posed
” by Italy is “
subtle and interesting, even if it gives it the wrong answer
”, he conceded.
The ChatGPT application, developed by the American OpenAI, violates in many ways, according to Italy, the European regulations which protect Internet users, and among other things does not check whether its users are of legal age.

"It's only a rough parrot"
OpenAI responded on Thursday that it had undertaken "
to strengthen transparency in the use of personal data (...) and guarantees for minors
", with measures which must be evaluated in the days to come by the Italian authorities.
In

, Jean-Noël Barrot pleads for France's more moderate approach, consisting in “
framing innovation so that it complies with the principles to which we are attached
”.

When ChatGPT burst into our daily lives, I seized the national digital ethics committee
”, he underlined.
The supervisory body had previously, in November 2021, issued an opinion on "
conversational agents
".
It made several recommendations, such as letting the user clearly perceive the machine nature of these applications, without trying to humanize them.

In a few months, the national ethics committee will give us an updated version of this opinion in the light of ChatGPT
", promised Jean-Noël Barrot.
The minister was very critical of this application in February.
