The 18-year-old law student disappeared on April 9, 2022 after leaving her home to attend a party in a farm in the municipality of Escobedo, in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, the state capital.

Twelve days later, her body was found in a disused cistern at the Nueva Castilla Motel, a building near the place where she was last seen.

"Many things were done wrong"

For Escobar, the Debanhi case became emblematic and transcended borders, because it evidenced what hundreds of women victims of disappearance and femicide live in the country, whose cases have not been resolved either.

They wanted to see it as an accident and we showed them that no [...], that it was a femicide"

"Beyond the femicide, it was a situation that is representing all the women of Nuevo León, all the women of the country, many women from all over the world," she mentioned.

Escobar denounced that the Nuevo León authorities tried to "shelf" the case after affirming that the young woman died from a deep contusion to the skull, for which the strongest line of investigation pointed out that she had accidentally fallen into the tank.

However, Escobar requested the exhumation of the body and a second autopsy, carried out by federal authorities, revealed that he died of suffocation, specifically due to obstruction of the respiratory orifices.

He added that

his daughter's case uncovered "the dark things" that happen within the Nuevo León Prosecutor's Office

and that relatives of other victims were afraid to say.

"We did not agree with any of the expert [investigations] that they did. When they [...] wanted to see it as an accident and we showed them that no, that we were right, that it was a femicide, that Debanhi did not fall alone and that there is a lot behind this," said Escobar.

we have also had to learn to live without it

,” she shared.

The authorities, under scrutiny

For their part, members of the organization United Forces for Our Disappeared in Nuevo León (FUNDENL) agreed that the disappearance of Debanhi exhibited the deficient work of state authorities.

"We also saw how all the omissions, negligence, and lies of public servants were exhibited both within the General Prosecutor's Office, as well as the Special Prosecutor for Disappeared Persons and the Local Search Commission," said Irma Leticia Hidalgo, founder of the organization.
