Professional legal representatives from the coalition and Yesh Atid and the state camp gathered today (Monday) at the President's residence to continue discussions on a compromise regarding the legal revolution.

This, following an initial round of meetings that Herzog had with the political teams of the parties before the holiday.

This is a working meeting of lawyers - without politicians, in an attempt to promote professional agreements on agreed changes in the legal system.

Representatives of Yesh Atid and the state camp met this morning for a meeting to coordinate positions, and in a joint statement it was stated that the teams coordinated "upholding the principles of democracy, and maintaining its independence while striving to bring about legislation that will strengthen and fortify it. The teams are willing to reach broad agreements, but we will not compromise on the independence of the judicial system and the anchoring of fundamental rights to the citizens of Israel".

A week ago, working teams from the coalition, the Yesh Atid faction and the state camp faction met at the President's House, as part of the compromise efforts on the legal revolution.

Officials in the opposition and the coalition who participated in the negotiation meeting at the President's residence say that there was a "positive and good" atmosphere and a "good will" of both sides to reach long-term agreements - and not just a temporary solution.

During the meeting, it was agreed that professional and legal teams on behalf of the parties would hold talks on all issues during the holiday to map out the agreements and disputes and the political teams would gather afterwards to make decisions.

According to sources who participated in the meeting, the representatives of the coalition and the opposition agreed at the end of the meeting on four common principles for the basis of the talks: "Neither side wants to subdue the other or return to a one-sided process, each side understands the needs and concerns of the other side, the sides are closer to agreements from afar, and everyone understands Failure means escalation and the size of the hour."

The revolution planned by the government includes a series of significant changes in the legal system, such as a determination that only an expanded composition of the High Court of Justice can invalidate legislation passed by the Knesset. Another step of the revolution, designed to strengthen the government's hand vis-à-vis the court, is the establishment of a superseding clause that will nullify decisions of the High Court by a majority of only 61 members of the Knesset, as well as changing the composition of the committee for the selection of judges so that it is fully controlled by the coalition.

The reform also deals with weakening the power of the legal advisors to the government, so that their position will not bind the government, and with eliminating the reason for reasonableness, which, among other things, significantly limits the court's ability to intervene in the appointment of senior officials.
