The presidents of the United States and Canada announced in late March an agreement to regularize transit through a border post that allowed tens of thousands of migrants to move between the two countries and seek asylum without going through an official crossing.
Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau unveiled the details of the process at a bilateral meeting in Ottawa.
In years past, migrants have taken advantage of a remote highway outside Champlain, New York, to reach Canadian territory, where they are allowed to stay while their refugee claims are processed.
In recent months, there has been an uptick in the number of people entering Canada illegally.
Last year, almost 40,000 migrants entered the country unauthorized.
The Canadian right had been pressuring Justin Trudeau for some time to apply more effective restrictions at border crossings.
Today, once apprehended at the border, migrants can receive medical care and work while their claims are being processed.
Now, the Canadian government is studying to stop accepting asylum applications from migrants who enter through Roxham Road.
The decision, say activists and organizations in defense of human rights, will lead migratory flows to go to riskier points on the border.
