The Pope's Exorcist, a film inspired by the memoirs of Father Gabriele Amorth, who confessed to having performed more than 70,000 exorcisms throughout his life, hits theaters Thursday.
Russell Crowe plays a man who transcended borders by appearing in countless interviews, writing several memoirs and participating in documentaries in which he narrated his unusual exploits.
It is that the Italian claimed to have performed more than 70,000 exorcisms, an even more impressive number if one knows that it
was to rule out people who he believed did not need to be exorcised
.
If he "purified" someone he did it because he had no other alternative.
Russell Crowe stars in "The Pope's Exorcist."
In the second episode of the 2004 documentary series
True Horror with Anthony Head
titled "Demons," Amorth says that
he only exorcised on one condition: that Satan's supposed "victims" go through a psychologist or psychiatrist before reaching him
.
In the program, he makes it clear that it happened to him many times when someone told him that he had the Devil inside and it was a lie or an erroneous perception.
Gabriele Amorth died at the age of 91.
Who was Father Amorth?
Amorth was a renowned exorcist in Rome who officiated as such from 1986 to 2000. At first he worked under the tutelage of Father
Cándido Amantini
, whom he replaced after his death.
In 1990, Gabriele founded the
International Association of Exorcists
, of which he spoke in dozens of graphic publications such as "Narrations of an exorcist", "An exorcist tells his story" or "Exorcism and psychiatry".
Amorth said that he performed more than 70,000 exorcisms in his lifetime.
Some of his most resonant statements had to do with his idea that
Adolf Hitler
acted possessed or influenced by some evil demon.
He also slipped that yoga and the
Harry Potter
book series have links to the devil.
For those who exercise the "charism of exorcism," Amorth recommends that they be well regarded for their life of prayer, faith, acts of charity, and judgment.
Furthermore, he says that they should rely on and rely solely on God's Word and traditional prayer, be completely detached from monetary concerns, be deeply humble, and not hoard darkness.
Amorth worked as an exorcist during the papacy of John Paul II and died in 2016 at the age of 91.
