Step by step, how was the investigation to find the two Argentines wanted for a crime in Punta del Este

The body of Rubén Torres appeared handcuffed and semi-naked on February 13 in Maldonado. The suspects had a red alert from Interpol.

One of the most difficult tasks of a criminal investigator is the identification of suspects.

That is, "putting first and last name" to the people registered in images.

Last March, detectives from the Complex Crimes and Homicide Division of the Uruguay Police managed to identify two Argentines:

Juan Pablo Levaggi (22) and Eduardo Capelletti (35)

.

They were looking for them for the murder of Rubén Torres (46), a young man murdered in Maldonado, Uruguay.

This Wednesday afternoon agents of the Federal Investigation Division of Fugitives and Extraditions of the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) arrested them in different streets of Tolosa, La Plata.

"They were given away; as if they were not aware of the Interpol red notice," says one of the Argentine investigators, in charge of tracking and capturing both.

Levaggi continued to work as a barber in a barbershop in his neighborhood.

Capelletti, on the other hand, was employed by a catering company.

The arrests were coordinated to be made simultaneously.

In the next few hours, the extradition process to Uruguay will begin, where they will be tried for aggravated homicide.

from Punta del Este

.

He had last been seen on January 31.

His sister reported him missing on February 8.

Four days later the body was found on a property in the city of San Carlos, in the department of Maldonado.

His corpse was found in an advanced state of decomposition,

semi-naked and bound hand and foot

.

The autopsy would reveal that he died of suffocation.

It is believed that he had been taken by surprise while he was sleeping, his legs and arms bound.

The two arrested in La Plata for the crime of a waiter in Uruguay.

His relatives, at that time, denounced that Torres had been receiving "visits from two Argentines" for a long time.

Their descriptions matched images taken from the bank where two men

had attempted to withdraw cash using the victim's debit card.

The same cameras recorded them arriving in Torres' car, a white Chevrolet Spark.

The car would appear in Montevideo.

It had been set on fire.

Levaggi and Capelletti were also recorded on the cameras at the Montevideo bus terminal.

There they took a bus bound for Fray Bentos and entered Argentina through Entre Ríos.

It was February 7;

one day after the crime.

When not even the relatives of the victims knew about his murder.

One of the Argentines was identified thanks to the Biometric Facial Recognition software of the Criminal Individualization Division.

With the information from the National Directorate of Migrations, the data of the person with whom the identified person had made migrations was obtained.

Interpol Uruguay published the red notices on March 28.

And he entrusted his peers in Argentina with the task of finding and stopping them.

The suspects had a red alert from Interpol.

"Both have a record for crimes against property. Simple robberies, thefts, qualified robberies. They are causes of La Plata," adds the Interpol Argentina investigator.

Capelletti registered an entry to Uruguay in January.

He left the same day.

That same month he returned to the neighboring country.

This time he did it together with Levaggi.

He returned to Argentina on February 7.

And the most striking thing: on February 13 they entered Uruguay together again.

A few hours passed and they returned to Argentina.

"The criminal often returns to the scene. Although so far it is impossible to know what was the reason for the movement. Of course, until then there was no red alert," says the detective.

And he concludes: "since their names were never published in the Uruguayan press, we thought they felt safe, that they had not been identified."
