The nine wise men rejected the request for a referendum demanded by the left. The decisions rendered are not subject to any appeal.

The Constitutional Council had the fate of pension reform in its hands.

The nine wise men finally validated the essentials of the pension reform on Friday, including its flagship measure of raising the legal retirement age to 64, while rejecting some measures of the government project such as the creation of a "senior index ".

The Council also rejected a request for a shared initiative referendum (RIP) submitted by the left.

A second request, filed later, must however be the subject of a new decision on May 3.

The decisions of the Council, responsible for monitoring the conformity of laws with the Constitution, are not subject to any appeal.

Many demonstrators near the Constitutional Council

Earlier in the day, Emmanuel Macron had invited the unions to the Élysée next Tuesday, for a dialogue

“without preconditions”

, and

“whatever the decision of the Constitutional Council”.

A proposal that was not well received by the unions now turned to their traditional meeting of May 1.

“There is a decency to be had, people will not move on like that”

, judged the boss of the CFDT Laurent Berger.

A sign of great tension, any demonstration near the headquarters of the institution, located in a discreet wing of the Royal Palace, has been prohibited since Thursday evening after a brief blockage in the morning.

And impressive anti-riot barriers have been erected on rue de Montpensier.

Many demonstrators also moved and awaited the decision of the Constitutional Council on the forecourt of the town hall.

The Comédie Française, a neighbor of the Council in the Palais-Royal, has canceled its performances on Friday.
