How the Argentinian startup that turns newly received programmers into experts works

2023-04-17T09:49:31.846Z

It is an intensive training that solves the lack of technological talent. What does it consist of and who can access it?

Teamcubation

is something like a "talent incubator" that prepares programmers to go out into life (the tech world of work, in this case).

It is a startup that came to the market with the mission of solving the famous

lack of technological talent

that worries companies so much today.

How?

Training programmers who are already working and transforming

newly received juniors into experts

.

They define themselves as a company that

develops experience

.

That does not train, trains.

To apply in real life what was learned in books.

So simple and yet so complex.

The company provides experience to junior programmers.

After accumulating a long experience in the digital industry,

Diego Jolodenco and Mariano Wechsler

created Teamcubation, a methodology designed to

gain experience while working

on real projects in the technological world.

"We seek to know the strengths of a programmer and how to continue developing them and, at the same time, capture the weaknesses in order to gain the experience he needs", they explain.

And they know something about the subject: Mariano Wechsler has 27 years of experience as a teacher at the

ORT

technical school , he founded

Digital House

and the software company

Digbang

, that is, he knows first-hand the difficulty companies have in attracting and retaining talent. technological.

Diego Jolodenco, for his part, has a more corporate past, although he is also closely linked to the systems area.

He worked at

YPF

and participated in various ventures.

"I've always had

junior programmers

in my startups and they ended up being great programmers so we know that

experience doesn't come by itself

, only if someone gives it to you," he says.

How did you come up with the idea of training programmers?

On the one hand, there is a

lack of talent with technological profiles

and on the other, the academies that bring people to the market but the companies do not take them because these brand new programmers do not have experience.

"It's difficult for companies to hire a programmer if they don't know how to work even if they have the ability. When we realized that, we understood that

programmers had to be trained

, not taught," explains Mariano Wechsler.

Diego Jolodenco and Mariano Wechsler, founders of Teamcubation.

How are programmers trained?

Working.

In a real case, not in a simulation or an exercise.

With the premise that the only way to learn to make software is by "doing it".

They offer the construction of a program or application, according to the needs of each client, developed by a mixed team, where

Teamcubation contributes the seniors (the experience) and the companies the juniors

.

In this way, Weschler explains, software development is an excuse to train juniors with the

client's technologies and methodologies

, but in turn adds value to the company.

The job/training

lasts six months,

after which time, the juniors become collaborators "ready to work on our clients' projects and integrated into their culture."

In addition, to guarantee that the entire process is carried out in a timely manner, they have training software,

PEP

(Programmer Training Program), which measures everything developers do in five areas: technology, client, product, team, and management.

The dilemma of the lack of technological talent

More than 20,000 jobs per year remain unfilled in Argentina due to a lack of professionals, and according to Microsoft, by 2025,

100 million more programmers will be needed

than there are today.

Why is this happening?

"Firstly, because there aren't that many people who study programming and secondly, because those who study are not taken due to lack of experience. In our country there is incredible talent that is different from the rest of the world, we are used to solving problems," Mariano explains. Wechsler.

And he adds that with the proposal to train junior programmers, not only are people given the opportunity for their first first job, but at the same time, companies are being involved to solve this "lack of technological talent."

What is Teamcubation's proposal?

Train

more than 30,000 programmers per year

by 2025. For this, the startup is currently working together with Mercado Libre, Agrotoken, RSK and BYMA, among others.

The companies are their clients, the junior profiles must be hired by those companies that in turn hire Teamcubation to train those juniors.

"Someone cannot come and pay to be trained, we

do not give classes nor are there teachers

in the traditional way," its founders highlighted.

"

Experience is not studied

. We must bring young people and also adults who need a change in their lives to study programming and then companies give them work even if they are juniors. We give them the experience", explains Diego Jolodenco.

"There is a lot of wasted talent from people who made the effort to study but later don't take it. If the company hires them, everyone wins. And that vicious circle is broken in which companies ask for experience and can't find it, so they say that there are no talents and at the same time the talent has no experience because nobody hires them," Wechsler clarifies.

There is a belief that programming is difficult and only for a few, however both the schools that provide training and the programmers say that this is not the case.

What do these professional talent coaches think?

"This is a belief that comes from before, because before it was difficult. Programming languages got a little closer to people, they stopped being so cryptic. If you finished high school you already have the basic knowledge to learn to program" says Martin Weschler.

Programming is more of an experience of doing than of learning.

We send people to learn to code all the time... which is not the same as learning to do.

You can watch 100 hours of Wimbledon but then when I give you the racket you won't play perfect tennis.

Because experience is key, it's what you need," explains Jolodenco.

And he clarifies: "

Programming changed our lives

, we climbed socioeconomically, we couldn't have done it with another profession. If everyone knew how to program, there wouldn't have to be a single unemployed person in the country, because

there is work for everyone

."

What are the requirements to be part of the Teamcubation training?

They only need to be people who

have learned to program

but have never had work experience in software development.

They can also be programmers that companies want them to

change technology

and need the necessary training.

How much can you charge when going from junior to senior?

A junior programmer can start at $170,000 up to $250,000 and go as high as $400,000 depending on the company.

If you work for an international company, then the salary will be in dollars and with experience you can exceed US$ 2,000 per month.

How to contact TeamCubation?

The work methodology is

without a classroom and without classes

, remotely and with face-to-face meetings that are scheduled according to the needs of the clients.

Each team is made up of three junior developers who will be trained by a leader and a senior developer from the Teamcubation staff.

The company already has 25 collaborators, of which 20 make up the technology team, and since the shortage of talent is a global problem, they plan to take the proposal to other parts of the world such as Europe and the United States.
